As I look forward to designing our club’s next kit, I decided to do some work coming up with a new treatment for our logo/badge.

In 2020, two local youth soccer clubs — Soccer West and Soccer South — merged to pool their resources and create a bigger club profile in the Greater Des Moines area. This mark, created pro bono, draws on the iconic Des Moines flag for its inspiration. The two stars represent the two original clubs, both of which had been in operation since the late 1970s.

Volunteered my time to work with the DMSC board to design a kit to commemorate the club’s 5th anniversary. The final design was voted on by club members and made available to order as a fund raiser to help provide soccer opportunities for deserving youth in the greater Des Moines area.

Kits and identity I’ve designed for the adult soccer program I participate in. At least once each week, if not twice, each week from April to November we get up with the sun to get a game in. Each of the sponsor logos is for a company that one of our group members owns. Worked with the good folks at Olive & York to make these happen.

I submitted a few concepts for our local USL2 club’s supporters’ scarf design contest. Was fortunate to have my design selected via online fan voting.

A fan of baseball all my life, I enjoy spending free time creating work that celebrates my favorite players, teams, baseball cards, etc.

As a college intern in 1994, I created this logo for our local Arena Football League franchise.

I’ve included a handful of work-in-progress stuff here, too. It’s hilarious to think that I was presenting early round logo concepts as pencil sketches on tissue paper. These are the hard copy originals.

Some early production runs of print materials and merchandise still used the art deco-style lettering around the roundel that you see in some pics here, soon replaced with a heavier typeface for better reproduction.

And while I don’t recall if it was owner Jim Foster’s idea or mine to put the goggles on the helmet, I know for sure that it was my recommendation to adopt a metallic gold to complete the color palette to better complement the throwback nature of the Barnstormers nickname.
